What a recovery score can tell you

Learn how wearable recovery scores combine signals, why apps can disagree, and how to read Stride estimates alongside sleep, data coverage and how you feel.

A summary built from several inputs

A recovery score is a calculation built from selected information. It is not a sensor reading in the same sense as a recorded heartbeat interval. An app chooses which observations to include, how to compare them with history and how to combine the results. The score is a summary of those choices.

That distinction matters because a single number can look more complete than the information behind it. A useful recovery screen should help you understand the inputs and their limits, rather than asking you to accept the number as a direct measurement of your whole body's readiness.

The ingredients differ between products

Google Health describes its readiness calculation using HRV, resting heart rate and sleep. Apple Vitals presents overnight measurements against typical ranges, offering another way to put readings in context. These examples show that products can organize related signals into different experiences. They do not establish one universal recovery formula.

Stride uses its own wellness calculation. It compares available HRV and resting heart rate with your prior history and includes sleep context. It does not import another app's readiness score as if the two calculations were equivalent, and research about a different product does not validate Stride's score.

Read the explanation before the colour

Ask which observations contributed, how recent they are and whether they differ from your own history. Then check the data coverage. If an input is absent or the personal reference is still developing, that changes how much the estimate can tell you. The explanation is part of the result.

In a hypothetical example, your overnight heart readings look familiar but recorded sleep is shorter than your chosen target. A changed score might reflect that sleep context. The useful information is the shorter recorded night and how it entered the calculation, not a claim that your body lost a precise percentage of its capacity.

Why two apps may disagree

Two apps can start with similar records and produce different numbers. They may use different time windows, personal references, sample selection or weighting. They can also receive different subsets of data. An overnight summary is not necessarily the same input as an average of samples taken throughout the day.

First compare the source, dates and available measurements. If those differ, investigate the data path. If they match, compare the published explanations. Trying to force one app to reproduce another score can hide a legitimate difference in methods. Stride does not promise to match another service's proprietary calculation.

A missing score is useful information

Stride needs enough prior observations and current readings to calculate recovery. Its personal baselines require at least seven prior observations. That minimum is a product rule for forming a reference, not a promise of clinical accuracy after one week. Missing nights do not become observations just because a calendar day has passed.

A blank score can therefore mean that the app cannot support a comparison yet. It should not be read as zero recovery. Similarly, yesterday's completed sync does not guarantee that today's inputs have arrived. Check the date and any sync warning before interpreting a trend.

Your experience adds a different kind of context

A wearable cannot directly record your whole experience of a day. How a session felt, whether your schedule was unusually demanding and the context of a disrupted night may help you understand what the dashboard shows. These observations are different from sensor data, but they do not become irrelevant because they are subjective.

Imagine feeling tired after a day with little recorded exercise. A low activity total does not prove that the day was easy for you. Equally, a favourable recovery estimate should not override pain, illness or other concerns. The number is not permission to ignore information that sits outside the calculation.

Use trends without demanding a perfect score

A sequence of recorded days can make a change easier to place. Check whether several inputs move together and whether you are comparing the same source. A source switch can require a new baseline, while gaps can make an apparent week-to-week difference less representative than it first looks.

There is no need to treat every movement as a problem to solve. Your aim can be to understand the record more clearly: which nights were measured, what changed and which questions remain open. Chasing the highest possible daily number can distract from the activities and routines the app was meant to help you reflect on.

What Stride promises to show

Its recovery estimate is for general wellness, not diagnosis, a fitness clearance or an injury prediction. A useful result helps you interpret your available information. It cannot guarantee how tomorrow will feel or tell you everything you need to know about your health.
